EXECUTIVE VERDICT. The largest correction to the preliminary material is conceptual: there is no evidence-supported universal “12ft successor,” no defensible single “gold standard” for all paywalls, and no reason to frame contemporary information access primarily as a contest between paywall-removal proxies. The most effective authorized system is a layered resolver architecture: native publisher access → institutional/public-library entitlement → DOI/identifier resolution → open-access/version discovery → repository/preprint search → author/publisher sharing → library resource sharing/document delivery → licensed news/AI channels → preservation systems where the desired item is legitimately available. Different layers solve fundamentally different barriers, so a universal efficacy ranking is technically incoherent.

For a UCLA researcher specifically, the highest-yield starting point is much stronger than the attachments suggest: UCLA gives current students, faculty, and staff off-campus access to subscribed resources through its VPN or proxy, with MFA; UC Library Search and “Get it at UC” expose holdings and full-text links; and UCLA interlibrary loan is free to UC students, faculty, and staff, including electronic delivery of articles and book chapters from libraries in the United States and abroad. It has a documented takedown/removal history involving browser stores and source-code hosts. That makes BPC important ecosystem intelligence, but not part of the recommended lawful-access stack below.

EVIDENCE GAPS. Even after repeated query branches, several questions cannot responsibly be converted into firm findings.

I did not find a credible, publication-independent benchmark comparing success rates across Archive.today, BPC, Hidewall, Ladder, bpc-fetch, Smry and AI browsers against a preregistered corpus of current soft and hard paywalls. Consequently, any “95% success,” star rating, “best,” “universal,” or “highest efficacy” ranking among them would be fabricated precision.

I could not establish a current authoritative upstream identity and release history for the exact 13ft/open.bolha.tools candidate or a sufficiently authoritative status/provenance record for RemovePaywall.com. They therefore remain “not established,” not presumed active.

I could not establish a credible project matching the seed’s complete “Bye-Bye Paywall + QUUA” description. The similarly named Byewall is demonstrably different.

Hidewall’s repository contains enough information to establish that the project exists and claims a Go rewrite, but not enough independently verified evidence to validate its performance numbers, security guarantees, or the provenance inconsistency between repository identities.

Publisher gift-link quotas, promotional windows and public-library title entitlements vary continuously by publisher/library. I therefore did not invent universal counts for NYT, WSJ, FT, Economist or other publishers where a fresh authoritative source was not obtained in this run.

No subscriber authentication was circumvented for empirical benchmarking. No cookies, headers, user-agent identities, metering state, authentication controls or subscriber sessions were manipulated. Empirical verification in this investigation was restricted to public project/release state, public documentation, repository metadata, extension-store information, official licensing statements and publicly accessible/open-access infrastructure.

Discovery did begin to approach saturation in the circumvention-tool branch: after the established BPC/Ladder/Hidewall/bpc-fetch family, additional searches increasingly returned tiny wrappers, archive redirectors, abandoned clones, or products whose mechanism claims merely repeated older techniques. The genuinely novel 2025–2026 developments were disproportionately found in the lawful access infrastructure branch—AI entitlement protocols, OA/repository ingestion, licensed publisher–AI relationships, and library workflow integrations—rather than in another demonstrably superior universal proxy.

For a UCLA researcher seeking one paper, the strongest workflow is:

UCLA authenticated publisher access → UC Library Search/Get it at UC → Unpaywall/CORE/PMC/Europe PMC/discipline repository → Google Scholar alternate version → author/publisher-authorized copy → free UCLA ILL.

For automated scholarly access resolution, the leaders are Unpaywall/OpenAlex for OA, with GetFTR or LibKey for institution-aware entitlement, and CORE/OpenAIRE/Europe PMC for broader repository/research-graph discovery.

For browser-based scholarly access, the highest-confidence contemporary trio is LibKey Nomad, Lean Library, and GetFTR, with Unpaywall as the OA-specialized complement.

For biomedical/neuroscience full text, PMC + Europe PMC + bioRxiv/medRxiv + institutional access + Unpaywall is exceptionally strong because it combines peer-reviewed archive content, author manuscripts, preprints, OA linking, and subscribed versions.

For general journalism, the strongest legitimate order is publisher subscription/free-share program → university/public-library entitlement or licensed database → licensed syndication → explicit AI publisher-license channel → preservation for historical legitimately available copies. The scholarly OA toolkit should not be assumed to transfer to journalism.

For historical web pages, the strongest high-trust preservation option in this research is Internet Archive/Wayback, with the explicit caveat that captures can be incomplete. Archive.today can have unique captures, but its current security/trust profile prevents placing it in the same risk tier.

For AI-native premium information, the most important current distinction is explicit licensing. Perplexity’s Gannett agreement is concrete evidence of premium journalism being integrated through a licensing relationship, while OpenAI has publicly documented numerous publisher partnerships. Neither should be generalized into “AI can access any paywalled article.”

For circumvention-technology ecosystem intelligence, not operational use, BPC Magnolia1234 is the highest-maintenance-velocity established project observed, everywall/Ladder is a substantial active self-hosted codebase, bpc-fetch is a genuinely recent automation-oriented entrant, and Hidewall is a very recent but under-validated architecture worth watching. “Highest maintenance velocity” here refers only to observable project freshness—not efficacy, legality, safety, or recommendation.
